RESERVE C.C. - TOSCAM MONTE LUCIA

BEST PUPPY BITCH - MAIBEE SHINE ON

JUDGES CRITIQUE

Sincere thanks to the officers and committee of the Northern Cavalier Club for inviting me to judge bitches at their championship show. They seemed very pleased with the catalogued entry of 320 dogs.

First of all I am sure everyone, including myself, would like to send every best wish to Audrey (Townsend) our dog judge elect who was unable to take her appointment.

It was a pleasure to officiate with Mrs. Sheila Allerton and our joint decisions were unanimous.

Best in Show went to the bitch Ch. Kaishmar Cara Mia Mine, Best Puppy to the dog Miskhill Miami Avec Pamedna and Best Veteran to the dog Ch. Judyland Touch of Magic, all three were blenheims.

The veteran dog, just turned 7 years, was in wonderful order and a great credit to his owner/breeder. It transpired that he was the sire of the Best in Show and grand-sire of the Best Puppy, so congratulations to all the connections.

Judging was conducted indoors, conditions which would facilitate towards the good atmosphere apparent during the show, rather than that of a outdoor garden party. Friendly rivalry, lots of clapping and a good crown staying to the final awards reminded one of how the shows used to be.

The two worse problems affecting the progress of this breed at the moment are the poor judging and the health issues. This is all one hears people talking about.

With the entries falling perhaps the return of the one good judge, where possible if numbers allow, would make the shows more leisurely and sociable, with everything getting so expensive, value for money is what is required, and I hope the exhibitors continue voting with their feet, and show societies sit up and take notice of a judge drawing a low entry. Shows will then become more meaningful and enjoyable, and therefore a good trip out worth paying for.

Besides the credit crunch to contend with, this breed is going to be in for a very bumpy ride shortly. The dedicated breeders and owners who are passionate about Cavaliers, and who are in it for the long haul I'm sure will ride it out. Let's hope the rest get thoroughly fed up with the Breed and leave them alone. Cavalier owners who are not au fait with the bloodlines and pedigrees and have not sussed out where the problems stem from by now, should not be breeding from their dogs. And let's have less science and more common sense please!

Getting back to the show....... This was a nice quality entry again with good ones in all the four colours, but more so numerically in the blenheims, the colour always more reliable to reproduce well.

Again, lots of large, dark eyes, another alarming trend in the breed which has been reversed. Just a few bad mouths but I was pleased to see many exhibitors had been busy with the toothbrush and scaler! Just wonderful and it will save a large vet bill in the long term.

Inevitably many bitches were experiencing the seasonal moult and this did affect the placings in some classes.

Veteran (10)

1st Gamble & Mordecai, Ch. Lisgarth Petrouchka with Millhill - Worthy 7 years old B/T champion of the best breed type with the classic shape, balance and size, has bags of style on the move with a proud head carriage, level topline and swishing tail. Scores full points with her head, beautiful expression, and large, dark eyes, added to which her exuberant, tomboy character make her a special individual. Short of furnishings for Best Veteran but has excellent colours and in good sheen and condition.

2nd Moulden, Poundroll April Dream. Rich blenheim 7 year old with a pretty head and eyes, appealing expression and good nose pigment, good bone, ideal conformation and topline standing and on the move, another happy, gay little girl with excellent presentation.

3rd Biggs, Camahieu Marquise of Kellorian Sh Cm.

Minor Puppy (31) This quality class was a bit of a headache to sort out, but finally whittled it down to the last few involving a very forward, striking blenheim, just a mere baby of a tricolour who was exquisite, and two blenheims litter sisters as it turned out, the one, a very strong contender, was doing her best not to win and had to stand fourth! I hope all who reached the last few cuts with their puppies were encouraged.

1st Waters, Maibee Shine On. Best Bitch Puppy. Beautiful show puppy, her striking outline and rich, well broken up blenheim markings drew the eye repeatedly, and her clever handler got the very best out of her moving and in repose. An upstanding puppy with an attractive head, beautiful eyes and pigment, quite forward and should come into her own in Junior, but my goodness, for the long term, she wouldn't be going anywhere if she was in my kennel. Has the difficult combination of a long neck with a short, level back, good shoulders, a beautiful from and well angulated hind quarters. Presented in lovely condition, she could be a good thing and shall follow her with interest.

2nd Hughes, Lorankas Sherrie Baby. Only a month behind in age but giving a lot away in forwardness, however, I thought she was an exquisite tricolour in terms of breed type, lovely head and classic hand painted markings with excellent tan in all the right places. Added to which she has the required shape, conformation and balance to make up into a top bitch, immaculate presentation as always from this kennel, unfazed and a good temperament to be with an unfamiliar handler, shall watch out for her too.

3rd Attwood, Clentview Jaelo.

Puppy (15)

1st Turp, Tingamar Tickled Pink. An elegant blenheim with rich, well broken markings, very pretty head with the desired dark Cavalier eyes and nose pigment, good conformation and balanced outline, for ten months she is well furnished and uses her tail well on the move, looks a good prospect for the Junior Classes.

2nd Pagan, Sorata Paprika. Great to see this kennel name back in circulation, this very typical ruby puppy with a pretty head and lovely expressive eyes, had good conformation and kept her shapely outline on the move, liked her style and her waggy tail.

3rd Hurst & Wake, Llustant Conqueress.

Junior (17)

1st Ward, Charalier Fancy Dress. Very glamorous toy spaniel with good, medium leg bone, pretty head pattern complemented by the essential large, dark eyes and nose pigment, her rich, evenly spaced blenheim markings really glowed with condition, at 14 months a little more furnishings can be anticipated to complete the picture along with good conformation and balance, stylish and sound on the move. Should have a bright future.

2nd Watts, Brymarden Moondance to Jamesbonny. Similar remarks apply to this quality blenheim who was a dainty type and had marginally more feathering being a month in front which makes a difference in a bitch's cycle, she too had dark pigment and good eyes and caught the eye with her rich blenheim markings, well related and an asset to any kennel.

3rd Flower, Anberan Dulche De Leche.

Yearling (18)

1st Ireland, Charnell Frolic. The first two were both top-notch blenheims, the winner full of glamour, possessed a lovely shape and outline, super forehand and quarters, and as always the icing on the cake beautiful, large eyes, dark nose pigment and with the treasured lozenge marking on the skull, showed and moved well, and was a more upstanding type too.

2nd Attwoods, Clentview Paris J.W. Who was requiring more effort from her patient handler to cooperate but this kennel showed some lovely bitches today that would make anyone green with envy. This glamorous blenheim had super long leathers framing a lovely head with gorgeous eyes and dark nose pigment, well made throughout and moved soundly.

3rd Elkin, Triodan Tempting Tara.

Novice (13)

1st Stocks & Mynott, Honeybet Soft Shoe Shuffle. Quality B/T, good breed type, lovely size and shape, a little out of coat but showing a nice, well balanced outline, good head pattern with large, dark eyes, showy and sound on the move.

2nd Flower, Anberan Dulche De Leche. Third in Junior, quality ruby in her underclothes but of good breed type and size. sweet head and expression, with excellent pigment and eyes together with a fresh dark topcoat a must for this colour, showy and sound.

3rd Johnston, Clockpelters Becky Sharpe of Brigodee.

Graduate (12)

1st Hogan, Ricksbury Royal Promise for Stavonga J.W. Very glamorous well broken blenheim in immaculate condition, the whites so soft and spotlessly clean, a handsome bitch with the desired large, dark eyes and pigment, correct forehand and level topline, very stylish and accurate on the move keeping a good outline.

2nd Waddington, Spindlepoint Babiche. In close contention, with well broken blenheim markings, large eyes, good conformation all through so moved accurately and showed to advantage.

3rd Mynott, Honeybet Just Magic.

Post Graduate (19)

1st Dawber, Vallender Marissa at Simanbeck. Good all-round blenheim with rich, well broken markings, beautiful large, dark eyes and pigment, kept a lovely outline in repose and moving around, dripping in coat, this point together with her balance and poise in the final run off kept her the class.

2nd Conneally, Coedgwylum Hot Flame. Well related bloodlines, I liked her dam very much and her auntie even better, super breed type, fabulous head, eyes and pigment, heavier marked blenheim than winner with the saddle marking, which made it more noticeable that she was not in her best jacket and got unsettled in the run off, though these points are only temporary, a super little bitch with a future, unlucky on the day.

3rd Boardman, Volney Daisy Belle.

Limit (18)

1st Lymer & Scheidt, Volney Chardonnay J.W. Well broken blenheim, good stamp overall and pleasing breed type with glamour, stylish and sound on the move, scored here on showmanship.

2nd Dale, Maratim Magic Ring. Well broken blenheim with large, dark eyes and pigment, good make and shape, correct breed type, moved soundly.

3rd Kerr, Lymrey Hi Society in Kinvaar.

Special Open B/T (10)

1st Phillips, Susella Angelica at Tillymist, Typical shape and outline for the colour, attractive head type, missed out in her previous class on lack of coat and furnishings, a wholecolour has to be in full gleaming show coat to project themselves from amongst the parti-colours, liked her good hind quarters, showy and sound.

2nd Crozier, Korraines Amelia. Warmed up to the proceedings as the class went on, good breed type, pleasing general make and shape, to add to the comments above, a wholecolour has to be a great showman as well to stand out from the crowd!

3rd Oakley, Rubynoaks Silk Slipper.

Special Open Ruby (8)

1st Pagan, Kimark Mi Amiga of Sorata. Correct breed type and following on from the comments in the previous class, the lovely head, expressive eyes and dark nose pigment owned by this exhibit are also an absolute must on wholecolours in top competition, although in between coats today, she is glamorous with a good make and shape, showed and moved well.

2nd Hughes, Lorankas Star Surprise. Also with a correct and pretty head, a denser top coat gave her a stronger colour but lacked fringing to complete the picture, ideal size, balanced overall shape and outline, not as showy as 1.

3rd Flower, Anberan Ginger Truffle.

Special Open Blenheim (6)

1st Hindle, Ricksbury Venus to Ellisiana. Lovely type, rich blanketed blenheim, beautiful huge, dark eyes and dark pigmentation, well balanced outline, moved and showed well.

2nd Gow, Lyncraeg Hotanna. Elegant breed type, well broken blenheim markings, super large, dark eyes, so expressive, and correct nose pigment, good make and shape, showy and sound.

3rd Waddington, Spindlepoint Grace Darling.

Special Open Tricolour (5)

1st Bartlett, Korolevsky Anna Akhmatova. Beautiful headed tri scoring full marks in this department, with excellent tan, lovely big, dark eyes all framed by glamorous ears, had well broken markings but absolutely bereft of any show coat and fringing, moved and showed well.

2nd Long, Arrolines Ulyses. Heavier marked than 1, and losing out on maturity in this class, previously VHC in the puppy class, but a very pretty bitch with excellent tan.

3rd Long, Ronmal Sweet Serenity at Arroline.

Breeders (7)

1 Scott, Toscam Monte Lucia, Reserve C.C. Proper toy spaniel with good bone, ultra pretty head with tapered lip finish, this and her large expressive eyes all framed by long silky ears gave her a refined quality. I discovered I had placed her well at the Midland Club in 2004, since which, like good wine, she seems to have only got better with age. Now mature, this well broken blenheim has lovely balance standing and moving, keeping a good topline, very showy and glamorous. Looked a treat and made a good pair going around with the C.C. winner.

2nd Mynott, Honeybet Hot Rosie Lee. Quality tricolour of good size, make and shape, generous head with large, dark eyes framed by glamorous, long ears, excellent tan markings and body condition, but lacking tail feathering, moved and showed well.

3rd Bartlett, Korolevsky Zviozhdocka J.W.

Open (10)

1st Barker, Ch. Kaishmar Cara Mia Mine, Best in Show and Bitch C.C. Very glamorous toy spaniel with good bone, lightly marked with a wealth of silky coat, ultra pretty head, huge, dark eyes, dark pigment and tapered lips framed by full, silky long ears, compact and balanced and nice to handle on the table, all the pieces fit together, well handled, moved and showed to advantage. Together with the Res. C.C. winner, the pair are like living dolls! One can imagine them propped up in the corner of the settee at home. They must bring their owner/breeders hours of immense pleasure and pride.

2nd Fox-Shone Ch. Pamedna Touch of Fan-TC. J.W. Very glamorous tricolour with excellent colours and markings, she could be hand painted, this and her fabulous head and eyes are for forte, dripping in coat and shown in lovely condition, she is a taller and more angular bitch than winner, and at 3 years has still to come to hand, so she is likely to add to her already impressive CV for a while yet.

3rd Pagan, Ch. Campanards Triple Rose at Sorata.
