COMPANION DOG SHOW, BBQ & PUPPY PARTY

On Sunday 24th June 2007 the Society held another Puppy party and Companion dog Show at Wreay Village Hall near Carlisle. Despite the weather, it was a great success.

The event commenced at 12 noon and the sky was looking suspiciously grey. However, not to be daunted, we set up the stalls outdoors and the Barbie was well under way and under the control of those well known Barbie Wizards:- Jeff Hindle, Alan Beattie, Ray Waddington and Ian Sidgwick.

They conjured up a wonderful Barbecue of lovely meats and all the trimmings and just as everyone was tucking in to their first course and the judging had just commenced, the heavens opened and we all had to make a dash for the indoor facilities, taking all the stalls and goods with us. Everyone mercifully helped and before too long, everything was organised inside and the judging could commence again and meals could be finished off by the lovely homemade sweets on offer.

Malcolm Sandland was the Judge for the day. There was some mention of arms up backs, but at the end of the day, he said he had enjoyed himself. His wife Karen also helped out by judging the Junior Handling Classes and both were aptly accompanied by Malcolm Spark as the Steward.

There were Pedigree Classes first and some of the principal winners were Maureen Richardson’s Daisy, who won the Puppy walk, Norma and Gordon’s Sidney who won the puppy class and overall Best Puppy in Show. Best In Show went to Alan Beatties Phylmars Bob Up for Norcrest who was very well presented by his breeder Phyllis.

The Novelty Classes were the fun of the day and kicked off with the fancy dress which was won by Jade Pascoe who also won the Junior Handling. She was dressed in a Pirates of the Caribbean costume, with her dog dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow. The girls won the best six legs whilst Alan and Ray could only muster 4th and 5th places. The Bonio Race nearly became a disaster when it was discovered that we did not have any Bonios. Pauline saved the day when she managed to raid the raffle prizes and find some Markies instead, which proved equally popular and the class was won by Alan’s dog.Josh won the longest ears competition and the dog and owner most alike was won by Sara Maddison and her King Charles spaniel. However the dog the judge would most like to take home turned out to be the Spinione.

During the show, there were lots of other attraction taking place and these included Guess the Weight of the Cake which was won by Doris Sinclair; Guess the Number of Sweeties in theJjar which was won by Sheila Hindle and the Treasure Hunt which was won by Sara Maddison and the Raffle.

At the end of the day we had lots of fun and enjoyment and I think everyone enjoyed themselves. We had a lovely meal and at the same time we raised £170 to donate to the Hearing dogs for the Deaf which is all thanks to those of you who attended the show. The Committee would also like to take this opportunity to thank all those who helped to make the day a success, particularly the spouses of committee members whose help was very much appreciated and without which we could not have managed on the day. Special mention must be given to Ray Waddington, Jeff Hindle, Joyce Beattie and of course Malcolm Sandlan.
