Critique
I would like to firstly thank
the Committee for their kind invitation to judge their Club Open Show. A friendly
atmosphere with typical ‘northern hospitality’. I was very honoured
to have a fabulous entry of 78 dogs. All made for a very enjoyable day with
your ‘Toy Spaniels’. I was lucky to have Norma and Susan as my very
efficient stewards allowing me to concentrate on the job in hand. I apologise
for the late submission of my critique. My un-planned business commitments put
me rather out of action for November and December.
VD (1,0) Mangham’s Garlouchi Just Magic of Charnavale JW. A very happy
10 year old well broken Blenheim in good coat. Still enjoying the show ring
with tail wagging non-stop. I admired his high set ears and nearly flat skull.
Large round eye just a little pale now but still a soft, gentle expression.
Body compact, level back and low set tail. Very good in front but just a little
weaker behind going away. RBD & BVD.
SVD (2,1) Walker’s Korolevsky Iosif Sh CM. Judged him as a veteran a few
year and now 12 years old and a really kind gentleman and still adores his owner.
Lightly broken Blenheim; not quite in as good coat as the winner of VD. Such
a gentle expression with his large round dark eye. Ears set high and well feathered.
Still as sound as a bell and impresses on the move. Carrying a little more weight
in his vintage years than idea (‘pot…. Kettle’ springs to
mind !!).
MPD (1,0) 1st Lee’s Kelrick Flashback. A promising Blenheim baby going
through that gangly stage but lots to admire. Well-proportioned head and liked
his muzzle. Dark round eye would like a little larger for ideal. A little longer
in loin with well-set tail carried just right on the move. Moves away with drive
just needs to tighten in front coming towards. Accurate footfall on the go around.
Silky straight coat and well broken pattern. BPD
PD (3,0) 1st Kilcoyne’s Granasil Bourbon. An eye catching 10 month old
Ruby who makes a perfect silhouette stood. Really liked his head and such a
gentle expression. Large dark round eye, high set ears and flat skull. Slight
arch to neck and really well laid shoulders. Short coupled and in tip top condition.
Really drives from the strength of his hocks. Was super sound in the class and
impressed me so much I had earmarked him for top honours. I was so disappointed
that he went lame in the final challenge for Best Dog; as I am sure was his
owner/breeder. 2nd Renaud’s Ellenaud Oliver Twist. Liked this Blenheim’s
soft gentle expression. Eyes were dark and round but would like a fraction larger.
Looking longer and leaner so not as compact as the winner. Moved well going
away and tailed carried just right on the move. Silky coat and well broken pattern.
3rd Leach’s Ouzlewell’s Tomasso.
JD (3,1) 1st Bayliss’ Castlewytch Moon River. Only just out of puppy but
already worthy of top honours. Loved his typical head and wonderful expression.
Well-proportioned head, the kindest eyes and well cushioned muzzle. His body
shape and outline was just what I was looking for both stood and on the move.
Slight arch to neck, good length of rib and strength of loin with tail set low
and carried just below the level of the back on the move. Could not fault his
movement; Sound away and back and accurate footfall in profile. His feathering
and silky coat is developing well. Yes …….I suppose we would like
a little more break in that rich chestnut ‘saddle’ but his markings
are very symmetrical and his type and soundness just have to be recognised and
rewarded. Easy winner of BD & with the strength of the Junior bitch entry
had to settle for BOS. 2nd Wileman & Bott’s Granasil Trick Or Treat
for Narvidar. Another just out of puppy and already in raven black coat with
rich tan markings. Liked his nearly flat skull and high set ears. Large dark
round eyes and kind expression. Like a little more fill under the eye. Longer
in body and higher on leg than the winner. Moves with real drive going away,
front needs to settle coming towards.
MD (1,0) Lee’s Kelrick Flashback.
ND (2,1) 1st Lee’s Kelrick The Irish Rover. Loved the well broken markings
and richness of the chestnut on this Blenheim youngster – just out of
puppy and head developing well. Liked his head proportions and flat skull with
high set ears. Soft expression; eyes round and dark in colour but would like
a little bigger. Slight arch to neck and well laid shoulders. Good length of
rib; needs to be a little shorter in loin. Straight front. Needs to strengthen
in hock. Moved with spirited gait; just a little proud of his tail.
GD (1,0) 1st Spark’s Ricksbury Royal Louis. A beautiful head and such
a gentle expression on this 18 month old Blenheim boy….with a wonderful
temperament as well. Loved the size and shape of his dark eye. Ears set high
and well feathered. Slight arch to neck and well laid shoulders. Very sound
on move with real drive from his hocks. Longer in loin. Tail set low and in
spite of its constant wagging never carried above his top line on the move.
Coat was straight and silky, paler chestnut markings well broken and symmetrical.
PGD Blen or Tri (2,0) 1st Lee’s Melrose Dalton (imp Ger). Loved his size
and overall shape. A Blenheim with well broken rich chestnut markings and silky
coat. He has a small, pretty head with a really soft gentle expression. Large
dark round eyes. High set ears and flat skull. Shorter in neck. . Body is short
coupled and tail set low and carried perfectly. Very sound on the move. In final
4 for BD challenge. 2nd Fox’s Lynmily Mr Blue Sky. A larger dog overall
than the winner. In super straight silky coat with well- developed feathering.
Dark chestnut markings and ivory background including perfect lozenge on head.
Gentle expression. He is a happy boy and really drives on the move but his tail
is carried too high on the move which detracts.
PGD Ruby or BT (2,0) 1st Spall’s Korraines Peaky Blinder at Llapsttam.
Black & Tan 2 yr old on good form and never stopped showing. Liked his head
and expression. He has high set ears which were well feathered. Dark, round,
gentle eyes. Slight arch to neck. Medium in bone. Well sprung ribs and compact
in body. Moves with drive and parallel away and back; just a bit proud of his
tail. Raven black silky coat and rich tan; could be straighter 2nd Wileman &
Bott’s Granasil Trick Or Treat for Narvidar.
LD (3,1) 1st Crane’s Cranvarl Washington JW. Really admired this dogs
head proportions with width to head and flat skull, higb set ears and well cushioned
muzzle. Liked his gentle expression. Eyes dark and round perhaps a fraction
larger. A little short in neck. Compact in body, tail well feathered and carried
just below level of back. Straight silky coat in super condition. Moved with
drive and accurate foot fall. In final 4 for BD challenge. 2nd Kynaston’s
Granasil Golden Nugget. Really admired his overall body shape and balance. Large
dark round eyes and high set ears. Short in muzzle which detracts and spoils
expression. Short coupled and in firm condition. Straight front and well laid
shoulders, elegant in neck with slight crest. Moves away with drive and has
very accurate paces in side gait.
OD (5,4) 1st Crozier’s LochbuieTaken Advantage Korraine. Mature Black
and Tan of ideal size and overall shape. Makes a balanced picture stood and
on the move. Flat skull and high set ears. Eyes could be larger and darker in
colour. Fine in muzzle. Slight arch to medium neck and well laid shoulders.
Well sprung ribs and mice and short coupled. Moves with real drive from his
low hocks. Fabulous temperament; that tail never stopped wagging.
VB (2,0) Two very special ‘young’ ladies. 1st Callaghan & Todd’s
Tillashby Northern Star at Callyspride JW Sh CM. Such a pretty bitch with the
sweetest expression. Large dark round eyes and high set ears. Compact in body
and good overall balance. Good tail set and carried low on the move. In wonderful
coat; straight and silky with feathering in all the right places. Parallel away
and back; accurate footfall in side gait. 2nd Scott’s Lorphil Lalibertie.
Of typical size and overall shape. Like her head and soft expression. Eyes not
quite as dark now but large, round and set well apart. Just turned 10 years
and a credit to her owner. She is so fit with fabulous muscle tone and sound
away and back. Enjoying her show with super temperament. Just lacking the coat
of the winner.
SVB (3,2) 1st Hurst & Wake’s Llustant Conqueress. Another super sound
Blenheim and at 12 years old is also fit as a flea – congratulations to
the owners. I admired her a size, shape and balance. She has a sweet expression.
She was out of coat but it had a silky texture. Chestnut markings were well
distributed and symmetrical on her head. Moved parallel. Top line held on the
move and tail carried low and never stopped wagging.
MPB (3,1) 1st Drewitt’s Judyland Miss Bluebell. A very promising tri-colour
who impressed both in head and in body proportions. Loved the balance to her
silhouette stood. Beautiful head and eye with the expression I was looking for.
Coat pattern showing good distribution and symmetry; silky min texture and feathering
developing well for age. Nice straight front and well laid shoulders. Good turn
of stifle. A little erratic on the move away and back. 2nd Lee’s Kelrick
One Kiss. Looking a ‘baby’ baby and needed to carry more weight
and condition as she looked long and leggy today. Liked her head proportions
and ears set high with nearly flat skull. Dark eye but would prefer larger.
Moved parallel away and back.
PB (5,2) 1st Waters & Bryson’s Sweetbriar Soprano. Immediately drawn
to her overall balance, make and shape. Very attractive Blenheim with rich chestnut
markings and ivory background with silky coat developing well for age. Sweet
expression with dark round eye that I would prefer a little larger. Head developing
well with high set ears and almost flat skull; looking a little narrower in
muzzle than my other principle winners. Outgoing and confident. So well-constructed
so very sound, parallel away and back with accurate foot fall in side gait.
2nd Potter’s Toyswood Sophie. 10 month old tri-colour with a gentle expression.
Ears set high and well feathered for age. Flat skull, Would like darker eye
colour but they were large and round. Short in muzzle. Slight arch to neck and
compact in body. Moved with drive going away but a little untidy coming towards.
3rd Lee’s Kelrick Promises.
JB (9,3) An impressive class with a real depth of quality; All six would have
looked worthy in my final line-up. Definitely the strongest class of the day….
and a real battle of the Blenheims. 1st Hogan’s Stavonga Wendy’s
Song. BB & BIS. I judged her back in June as a very raw minor puppy and
thought then what an exciting prospect she was. She was exactly what I was looking
for today; of unmistakeable Champion quality. A sound toy spaniel of perfect
overall balance who impresses on the move as much as she does stood ….
and of course that beautiful head. She has ‘the’ look with those
large dark round eyes set well apart – her gentle expression could allow
her to get away with murder. High set ears framing her face and well cushioned
muzzle with fill under the eye. Short coupled with ribs already well sprung.
Perfect tail set carried so naturally on the move. Absolutely sound in all directions.
Coat in immaculate order; silky to touch. Markings well broken and very symmetrical.
BB & BIS 2nd Claydon’s Brymarden Breeze. Another happy youngster from
the top drawer who I would gladly award a CC to. I was really splitting hairs
for my final decision. Another beautiful head and soft, kind expression. Slight
arch to her medium length neck and well laid shoulders. She excels on the move
and the balance of her construction ensures she moves parallel, with drive and
with perfect foot fall. Loved her rich tan and ivory coat with even pattern.
Whilst I found her short coupled I thought the winner just a little shorter
in loin but we are talking a centimetre rather than inches. RBB & RBIS.
3rd Brook’s Moonvale Allo’ Vera
MB (6,3) 1st Fox-Shone’s Pamedna Que Sera. A black and tan baby that will
undoubtedly have a bright future. A picture of health with her black silky coat
shining like piece of wet coal and rich tan markings. My notes say ‘very
sound and so very pretty’. Loved her melting expression with those wonderful
dark round eyes. Very balanced in confirmation with angles fore and aft matching
so well. A happy care-free puppy who presents such a balanced picture on the
move with tail carried perfectly. BPB & BPIS. 2nd Mangham’s Charnavale
Perfect Angel. Another well balanced bitch who catches your eye for her size
and overall shape. Wonderful coat with silky texture and well broken chestnut
markings. Straight front and good bend off stifle allowed her to move with drive
and accurate footfall. Flat skull and high set ears. Lovely dark round eyes
that would benefit from being a little larger. Shorter muzzle. 3rd Lee’s
Kelrick One Kiss
NB (5,1) 1st Knight’s Queen Of Hearts De Los Ursidos Lodiak at Carolus
(imp Esp). I loved this Blenheim ‘puppy’ (she is 2 days out of puppy)
and it was no disgrace getting VHC in such a strong Junior class; she just looked
such a baby against her peers. I was delighted she re-appeared here so I could
write about her. A beautiful expression that immediately grabs your attention
and definitely has ‘that look; her head is delightful. It is so well proportioned
and these big dark round eyes are a joy. So self-assured on the move and absolutely
parallel going away and back. Of ideal body shape being short coupled with tail
wagging constantly and carried nice and low to balance. Would have been happy
to have her in my final line-up. 2nd Waters & Bryson’s Sweetbriar
Soprano. 3rd Bailey’s Aldoricka Liana
GB (3,0) 1st Claydon’s Brymarden Blush. Litter sister to 2nd in Junior
and carries the same stamp. She also has a beautiful head and expression. Richest
chestnut markings well broken pattern. Slight arch to neck and beautiful forequarters
with well laid shoulders and straight front. Would prefer her a little more
compact but top line strong and level both stood and on the move. Moved a little
close behind but footfall very accurate. 2nd Brook’s Moonvale Martini.
Admired her overall size, type, shape and balance – she makes a typical
silhouette. Lovely head with large dark expressive eyes, flat skull and high
set ears. Her coat was in super condition and silky with well broken pattern.
Does not have the front of the winner so whilst I preferred her overall shape
I had to credit the confirmation of the winner. 3rd Potter’s Toyswood
China Girl.
PGB Blen or Tri (7,1) 1st Colavecchia’s Carolus Miss Liberty. At 6 years
old her eyes have paled a little but apart from that she has the most beautiful
head and expression (which I underlined three times in my notes). I particularly
liked her muzzle and the fill under her eye. Body in super condition and short-coupled
with clean silky coat. Perfect tail set which emphasised her overall shape stood
and on the move. Moved with freedom and parallel away and back. 2nd Knight’s
Buttercup VT Burgste Hof at Carlous (Imp Ned). Smaller headed bitch although
in body she has ideal overall size and shape. Very dark eyes, nice and round
but could be larger to improve expression. Ears set high. Really liked her body
shape and good spring of rib. Moves with real drive but not so clean in front
as the winner. 3rd Callaghan & Todd’s Ellemich Parisienne at Callyspride
JW
PGB Ruby or BT (7,3) Three rubies fighting the top positions all very sound
and I was therefore prioritising other bred virtues – I really was splitting
hairs. 1st Fox-Shone’s Pamedna Remberance. The eyes did it. Lovely, large
dark round eye and really kind expression. Ears set high and flat skull. Well
cushioned muzzle of correct length. In ideal body condition with good prong
of ribs and strength to loin. Top line level stood and on the move. Rich colour
and silky straight coat. 2nd Bailey’s Toyswood Fenella’s Legacy
for Aldoricka. Another with ideal head proportions. Muzzle well cushioned. Eyes
dark and round but would like larger. Moved with real drive courtesy of her
muscle tone and well bent stifles. Holds a level top line at all times and with
low set tail. 3rd Spall’s Llapsttam’s Hot Legs. Love her head and
expression; she is so very sound on move. Just kept losing her top line stood.
LB (3,1) 1st Whitfield’s Bevelmount Santa-Fe. Loved the head and expression
on this 2 year old ruby. She has such typical eyes and therefore such a gentle
expression. Very balanced in body proportions and very sound away and back.
Holds top line well on the move. Tail quite long and held a little to high on
the move which detracted. In super coat; rich colour and silky texture. 2nd
Lee’s Calonlan Love Actually for Kelrick. A very happy and lightly marked
Blenheim – outgoing temperament and tail never stopped wagging. Liked
her large dark round eyes and high set ears. Perhaps a little short in muzzle.
Very long and lean in body. Liked her straight front. Moving close behind today.
OB (7,2) 1st Fox-Shone’s Pamedna Eternity JW. An easy winner here as found
little to fault except her waistline !! Beautiful headed Blenheim with such
a sweet gentle expression. My notes say ‘wonderful eyes’. Ears set
high and nearly flat skull. Liked her sturdy body, short coupled and very well
sprung ribs. Perfectly level top line stood and on the move. Parallel in both
directions and accurate foot all in profile. Well patterned coat with rich colour
and silky texture. 2nd Colavecchia Carolus Miss Elsie. Loved her size and overall
compact body shape; presented a balanced picture stood and on them move. A smaller
headed bitch but still had a typical expression with large dark eyes set wide
apart. Coat in very good order. Good behind pf stifle and low hocks so really
drives on move. Just a little untidy coming towards. 3rd Scott’s Toscam
Mckayla.
